Dont trust they lie

This company is a fraud. My daughter started her insurance 6 years ago. When at the age of 22, she was told she would be having a black box fitted for a year. Which we agreed as being a new driver it would bring her insurance down. After a year went by, they then told my daughter, that she had to have a black box till she is 29 years of age. Falsely making her stay with them. My daughter has now bought a newer car. And they got very abusive over the phone. I then took over the call. And asked them why is my daughter still being kept with a black box. As no one else has a black box After 25. Only to be told she will be on black box all her life while she stays insured with them.
3 times my daughter has been lied to. They are nothing but a con. The reward system is a fraud. Please do not trust this company. They lie to you. And they do not give you rewards

Alright but could be better.

Alright but could be better.

£125 if you change cars with them, even if it's after the full year and you're renewing. It's not a hidden fee I knew about it but still ridiculously overpriced.

My score was always around 9ish sometimes would get random -10 on the smoothness score. I paid around 900 and they give back on a prepaid MasterCard around £60 which is good.

After two years I'm leaving them as the renewal price is basically the same as last year. If they gave real discounts like they say they do on the app, then I might have stayed.

So on the app the score is around 8.5 so the discount is supposed to be 27%, but that discount isn't based on last year, it is based on what price they want to charge you this year. So paid 910 ish last year they quoted me 896 including the 27% discount.

Moved to admiral giving me £600 no black box with 2yrs NCD.

Never needed to claim so can't comment on that part.

So far so good on the black box but

So far so good on the black box but - several drives unaccounted for? Just never logged? Usage score is a joke with little consistency and isn't averaged out for some reason. Could be a lot better in my opinion

Pointless policy, might as well throw money away.

Young drivers and learner drivers beware. This policy is not worth the paper it's written on, let alone the huge premiums. I have just attempted to get a renewal quote for my daughter who due to lockdown is still a learner driver. She has a black box fitted and an excellent driving score for the entire year or + 8.4. Her score has never dropped below 7. 2 months into her policy, as a very new young learner driver, a car stopped suddenly on an A road in an inappropriate place and she wasn't able to stop in time. Minimal damage was done to either car, but like a dutiful citizen we reported the accident to smartwheel. The call handler told her not to worry, she hadn't done anything wrong and these things happened to learner drivers. But as she was the one who failed to stop in time, it would go down as a fault (fair enough). However, they would not repair her car, with a small scratch on the bumper she was told it would need to be written off (minus the huge excess on her policy), or we could fix it ourselves and not make a claim. We did this, it only cost £150! Then I have just tried to renew her policy to be told that they will not reinsure her because she has had an accident. Her fantastic driving score was not even taken into account and her driving data will not be passed onto any other insurers. I am left wondering what the point is of using a specialist insurer for younger drivers if they refuse to reinsure? What is the point of having a black box fitted if it's not taken into account? Disgusting. Pointless policy. Do not insure your son or daughter with SMARTWHEELS

AVOID!!!! for young drivers!

Seems like a few similar case studies appearing here!
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!
My son had 7 days notice of his insurance cancellation after paying for 8 months with a black box installation.
His driving had been good until apparently 2 days ago without any texts or emails with accusation of speeding at 1am along a residential road that has extreme pot hole bumps all while his car was parked outside home address and he was at his girlfriend's house after she'd collected him at midnight.
All very strange other accusations too as if the black box had been cross wired or Insurance Company are scamming young drivers but of course that would never happen would it?! Don't be enticed by attractive initial rates as these poor practising Insurance Companies create their wealth by scamming young drivers all the time!

Poor Communication

My daughter had her insurance cancelled no emails or text message even though they said they had sent them.
My daughter had 2 weeks left on her insurance and would have had 1 yrs no claims but as now lost this.
All they could offer is another new policy with yet another black box, didnt even wait to see what the quote would have been and I really do not recommend this company for new young drivers!! Communication is poor resulting in being left with no car insurance unknowingly.!!!

Awful avoid at all costs

Awful avoid at all costs, cancelled insurance due to bad communication on there part, no warning at all so I was pulled over for being uninsured called them the next day as you can imagine unhappy as I received a hefty fine and was riddled with excuses from them. No letter or email to say they cancelled despite them saying they had. Avoid at all costs poor excuse of a company.

Stay clear

Cancel your insurance without notification, say they sent letters but can’t provide proof just an apology. Not a professional company. The cheap option is not always the best

Cancellation due to their departments having poor communication

I bought a policy that started in a weeks time. On the date i bought policy i booked my black box straight away. One week later my policy started and On the second day of cover i get a cancellation notice because No black box fitted. The notice was 7 days whereas The box Fitting was on the 8th day of policy starting. So this means my insurance is cancelled then 1 day later i get a black box which does not make sense. I called them explaining how ive got a 7th day notice but my box fittings on the 8th day, they didnt seem to care and just said get ur box fitted u wont have problem. Then i asked to get transferred to the box fitting department which took a lot of time to pick up. Then i had to change my box fitting date before my policy cancellation date.

This is absolutely ridiculous i am a student and new driver and this company is falsely accusing me and giving a cancellation Which will ruin my record and be on my history for 5 years. Such a rubbish service giving cancellation notice whilst its their fault that they have poor communication between box fitting department and insurer.
They should’ve called me to discuss and clarify the issue which could’ve been resolved instead of me just getting a text at 3am in morning saying ur insurance is cancelled this is the notice.

Plz i know this company may come cheaper for many drivers . On the bright side I will stay with them because they offer better prices. However i do not recommend this insurance at all for anyone.

No major issues

I was with smart wheels/more than in 2018 for my first year of driving. I had no issues with them at all apart from getting a bad score for driving past 11 at night, even though they state the black box is not curfewed. I give them 4 stars simply because I was a loyal customer with them for 2 years, no claims etc. But on my third year they quoted me MORE £ than the previous year, and TRIPLE the amount other companies where offering my insurance for. This was actually quite hurtful, considering my loyalty and good track record, I was utterly so shocked. So they lost a loyal customer.

Credit where credit is due

Credit where credit is due
My 18 year old son had an accident and the car was written off , the claim process was painless and completed in a very timely manner , he accepted responsibility and they made an offer for the car for virtually what he paid for it 6 months earlier. Three days later the money was in his account and we had another car on the road 2 weeks after the accident happened.
Insurers can get a bad press , but I'm happy to say that my experience of Smartwheels in handling our claim was very good.

Tread with care

Cheaper than rivals, but aggressive and full of hidden charges, not clear at the start what they are providing. They repeatedly threaten to cancel policy for minor issues, e.g, not filling their complex form in correctly. Don’t use until they are a lot lot cheaper. Worse Ive known for aggressive treatment of customers.
